Honi soit qui mal y pense

Lit. 'let it be a dishonour to him who thinks badly of it'. The motto of the Order of the *Garter, founded by Edward III, perhaps on St George's Day in 1348, after victories at Calais and Crecy (1346). The origin of the order's name and its motto is reputed to have come from the occasion of a ball given by the king to celebrate his victories in France. A legend first recorded a century and a half later has it that after the countess of Salisbury dropped her garter while dancing, the king picked it up and tied the ribbon around his knee. Those who saw the king's action laughed in jest but the king responded gallantly, Honi soit qui mal y pense.
